Creating a Framework for ESG
🧭 Creating a framework for ESGBreak sustainability down into Environmental, Social, and Governance areas you can act on.
Sustainability is broad, so it helps to split it into three areas of focus: Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG). Individual initiatives only work if the business has the structures and the culture to support them — so start by understanding how ESG affects your business.
Step 1: Build your ESG SWOT
Think about your products, services, and operations. Where do ESG factors help or hurt you? Type your notes below — they are not saved in this view, so copy them somewhere safe.
💪 StrengthsWhat do you already do well? E.g., local suppliers, low energy use, loyal staff.
⚠️ WeaknessesWhere are the gaps? E.g., no emissions data, no written policies.
🚀 OpportunitiesWhat could you gain? E.g., green finance, new customers, lower costs.
🌩 ThreatsWhat could hurt you? E.g., extreme weather, carbon pricing, supply chain data requests.
Step 2: Turn priorities into KPIs
From your SWOT, choose a few priorities and set measurable targets. Then work through the cycle below — open each step for details.
1. 📏 Measure progress against your KPIs
Track the same indicators regularly so you can see whether your actions are having an impact.
2. 👥 Understand who is affected
Find out what customers, employees, your community, and other stakeholders care about in your ESG performance.
3. 📣 Decide what to share and how
Choose which results you'll communicate and in which channels — a website page, a customer report, or supplier questionnaires.
4. 📰 Publish your results
Share achievements honestly. Avoid overstating results — greenwashing is a legal and reputational risk.
5. ✅ Consider third-party verification
Independent verification builds trust in your figures, especially with lenders and large customers.
6. 🔁 Adapt your systems
Change processes and reporting systems so the KPIs can be tracked routinely, not with a one-off effort.
💡 You don't need every step at once. Most small businesses take several years to mature — pick a few first steps and build from there, ideally with your accountant.
