Conversion tips
- Fueling: The stock 6.4L Ford® fuel pump will not provide adequate pressure for the Cummins 12-Valve engine. Use either the stock Cummins lift pump or an aftermarket lift pump. Diesel Conversion Specialists® (DCS) is a FASS fuel system dealer if an aftermarket pump is desired.
- Turbocharger: To retain the wastegate function on a stock turbo, relocate the wastegate actuator with the DCS low-profile actuator, DCS Part #3048.
- Exhaust: DCS offers an exhaust downpipe for 4" turbo-back exhaust, DCS Part #3079. It places the exhaust where installation is easier. Orientation varies, so the flange must be welded to the pipe during installation.
- Vacuum pump: If the engine-mounted vacuum pump is not used, either plug the intake port or disassemble the pump and remove the vanes. This prevents additional crankcase pressure from the vacuum pump venting into the engine.
About the 12-Valve
All Cummins 12-Valves are non-electronic injection pump engines and only need the shut-down solenoid functioning for the engine to run. This simplicity makes the 12-Valve the easiest to install and maintain, and the most dependable.
| Engine | Injection pump | Max stock torque |
|---|---|---|
| 1989–1993 (stock Dodge® applications) | Bosch® VE rotary pump | 400 lb-ft @ 1600 RPM |
| 1994–1998 (stock Dodge applications) | Non-modified Bosch P7100 inline pump | 440 lb-ft @ 1600 RPM |
"P-Pump" 1994–1998 Dodge 12-Valve
The 1994–1998 engines offer good power and torque as well as good fuel economy. The Bosch P7100 inline manual fuel pump produces 160–215 HP stock, and installing a fuel plate easily adds 15–95 HP. Because power upgrades are easily accomplished with fuel plate adjustments, these are possibly the most desirable 12-Valves.

- A/C compressor: The 1993 and earlier Dodge A/C compressors are longer-bodied than the 1994–1998 units and are unfriendly for conversions. If your A/C compressor was V-belt driven (1989–1991.5), update to a later A/C mounting bracket (Cummins® PN 3920351) and a 1994–2005 Dodge Cummins A/C compressor.
- Thermostat housing: The early VE pump engines have an upper thermostat housing that points straight up, which is also unfriendly. Use the newer-style 1994–1998 thermostat housing, which the DCS radiator hose set is compatible with.
- Fan support: Some early engines have a fan support mounted higher and more centered on the engine. The fan is too high for the stock fan shroud, and in 1999 and newer trucks it will not fit under the radiator shroud. Use a 1994–2002 Dodge Cummins fan support bracket.
