Driveline modifications
Before you take the truck apart:
- Measure the driveshaft lengths and record the measurements. Driveshaft modifications are required to slide the transmission back far enough to use the mechanical fan from the Cummins® engine.
- The transmission crossmember must be moved back. Either drill new mounting holes in the frame rail or modify the mounting perch. In the example below, the mounting pad was cut out, relocated further back and rewelded. This leaves enough room to remove and install the fan without interfering with the radiator.
- In most cases only the rear driveshaft needs to be shortened, typically by 2¼" to 2¾". This varies because the transmission crossmember is slotted and has multiple mounting locations. If the truck is lifted, the front driveshaft may need to be lengthened.
Transmission cooler lines
Re-bend the transmission cooler lines toward the front of the crossmember so they route better. Straighten the bends and inspect the lines before you bolt the engine down.
Throttle cable and cruise control
Make these changes with the engine out of the truck, while the firewall is accessible.
- Throttle: We recommend using a stock Dodge® throttle cable and either replacing the stock pedal with an earlier cable-pulling style or contacting Diesel Conversion Specialists® for pedal bracket options.
- Cruise control: Refer to the Swaphelper.com Cruise Helper installation instructions packaged with the module. The module is designed to use a cruise servo from a 1999–2003 Ford® gas-powered vehicle.
